Independent Artists get exposure on Atlanta Homicide

Atlanta Homicide

Within the sub-plot of every episode, music is given consideration as to how it might keep the audiences attention. The majority of the music in each episode comes from Independent music artist.
One notable exception; “Case” the award winning artist that brought you hits like Missing You, Faded Picture (in a broken glass), Happy Ever After, CASE - The Rose Experimentappears in the “Open Eyes” episodes. Lovely from Case’s latest works “Rose Experiment” is in the episode soundtrack. There are similarities to New York Undercover; just like in that television series gave rise to then lesser know artist and music at the time: Mary J Blidge, Jodec, and others, Atlanta Homicide is doing likewise! Artists are being featured in the soundtracks, closing credits and video mash-ups. These artists are not short on talent; they just need a little more exposure!!

Add these names to your playlist: Monica Matthews, Kai Alece, Lab Ratz, Dead Broke, Alvin Smith, Mike Moore and others. Stay tuned for more artists; if you want your music considered for use in an Atlanta Homicide episode or video, drop me an email at music@nottheads.com.

Going Down South - new book from Bonnie J. Glover

My newest novel is due for release July 29, 2008

Going Down South Book CoverWhen fifteen-year-old Olivia Jean discovers that she is pregnant, her parents flee their New York home and bring her to her grandmother Birdie’s Alabama farm. They plan on leaving her there for the duration of her pregnancy, but Birdie insists that Olivia Jean can stay only if her mother, Daisy, stays as well. Though she and her mother have been estranged for years, Daisy sees no alternative but to send her beloved, though unfaithful husband back north and settle in to life “down South” with her mother and daughter. Now that these three generations of proud, spirited women are together under one roof, Birdie, Daisy, and Olivia Jean must make sense of their roles as mothers — and find a place in their lives for love, independence and each other. –

“The Middle Sister”

First novel by Bonnie Glover

Glover Middle Sister - book cover

My mother divorced my father because he nailed down rugs. So begins Bonnie Glover’s engaging, quirky, coming-of-age novel set in the black ghetto of East New York in the 1970’s. When Pamela’s father leaves, she and her two sisters must fend for themselves. Pam is aided in her quest for some kind of transcendence from her family’s problems by a laconic action hero: Kwai Chang from the seventies television show Kung Fu. Kwai dispenses wisdom and elegant moves but, although he’s polite, he has a tendency to materialize during embarrassing family moments.

As Pam’s mother becomes increasingly unstable, the three sisters pull in different directions. Pam may have a way out through school but she cannot escape entirely the danger and pain around her own insistent sexuality. Full of local color, from the enormous feasts prepared by a hugely fat boyfriend to the excited response to a Brooklyn screening of Planet of the Apes.

THE MIDDLE SISTER introduces a new literary voice.

“The Middle Sister” is now available as an audiobook!

The Company You Keep

The Company You Keep

It Is Better To Be Alone, Than In The Wrong Company.
Tell me who your best friends are, and I will tell you who you are.
If you run with wolves, you will learn how to howl.
But, if you associate with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights.
A mirror reflects a mans face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.
The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate for the good and the bad.
The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve.

Any time you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases your mediocrity.
An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people.

As you grow, your associates will change.
Some of your friends will not want you to go on.
They will want you to stay where they are.
Friends that don’t help you climb will want you to crawl.
Your friends will stretch your vision or choke your dreams.
Those that don’t increase you will eventually decrease you.

Consider This:
Never receive counsel from unproductive people.
Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how.
Not everyone has a right to speak in your life.
You are certain to get the worst of the bargain when you exchange ideas with the wrong person.
Don’t follow anyone who’s not going anywhere.
With some people you spend an evening; with others you invest it.
Be careful where you stop to inquire for directions along the road of life.
Wise is the person who fortifies his life with the right friendships.

  • Painful moments, Trust God

A Black Doll Affair - Covington Library distribution

Dana Hill - A Black Doll AffairMotivated to action by the Kiri Davis’ - “Girl Like Me” film, Dana Hill has created A Black Doll Affair (www.danahill.info).

Our goal is to remind black children of their beauty and increase their self-esteem. Our task is to get beautiful black dolls into the hands of beautiful black children. Our message is Love the skin you’re in; Be Proud of Hue!

“Even at 4 and 5, you can still tell what America values and what it doesn’t.” Fifteen of the 21 black children in a Harlem day care center who take the “doll test” in Davis’ seven-minute film choose the white doll over the black one. The film - “A Girl Like Me” re-creates Kenneth Clark’s 1940s doll test that was used to fight school segregation in the landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education.

December Doll Distribution

Covington Library - A Black Doll AffairThe Black Doll Affair teamed with the community organization Home Away From Home to meet families and distribute dolls to the children. The evening included discussions, doll history, modeling tips, dance and distributing dolls to the children.

Special Thanks to:

  • Dekalb County Public Library - Covington Library
  • Tamika Maddox Strong - Branch Manger
  • Dara Janet Geiger - dancer
  • Micah Moses - model
  • Yolanda Nahbilah Cunningham-Young - doll collector

Like Davis, Dana Hill said she too has always been aware of the standards of “A Girl Like Me.” As far back as her memory allows, she’s been ridiculed for being “blue-black or too black.” While watching Davis’s doll test on the Oprah Winfrey show , she was empowered to make inferiority her priority and created the Black Doll Affair. Albeit disheartening, the doll tests came as no shock to Hill. Unable to get a modeling agency to represent her, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Advertising her beautiful dark skin and African features, she bought a thirty-two foot billboard on the corner of 52nd and Broadway. Ironically it was near Sean John’s ‘black power’ billboard. The board read simply: Got Spokesmodel? Dana Hill! It was up for three months, and although Hill said she got many phone calls from other dark skin women expressing their gratitude to finally see a girl like themselves in such a bold and beautiful campaign, she didn’t get one job offer.

Covington Library - A Black Doll AffairThe Black Doll Affair wants to distribute thousands of dolls to children.

Roc Shabazz - Health Tips

Proper Stretching Techniques For a Healthier Body

Stretching is an essential component of an exercise routine. However, recent studies reveal that most people do not incorporate enough stretching exercises into their fitness programs. Here are some helpful stretching exercises to increase flexibility and decrease stress and tension.

Stretch before and after exercising

Prior to working out, it is important to assess the type of fitness activity, activity level and an understanding of which body parts are tight. In general, it is important to stretch the neck, back, torso, hips and legs. We recommend performing the following stretches before working out:
Spinal Rolls (straight forward and diagonal - left and right), Standing Side Sways (alternating on each side), Standing Quad Stretches and Standing Calf Stretches. Once your workout is complete, it is extremely important to perform cool down exercises to decrease muscle tension and increase your flexibility. Sample cool down stretches include: Rocking Forward Bends, Hip Openers, Straddle Stretches and Spinal Twists.

Roc Shabazz
Stretching keeps the muscles elongated

As you workout, you put physical stress on your body to strengthen your muscles. In that process your body can become tight and somewhat constricted. Treating your body to a nurturing stretch elongates and opens up your muscles to receive oxygen and blood nutrients and to eliminate waste.

There are many health benefits associated with stretching regularly

The benefits include: reduced stress, tension and anxiety, increased mind/body awareness, improved circulation, increased energy levels, reduced risk of injuries and improved posture, just to name a few.
