As my first blog at WordPress wanted to start with something profound as to not limit me in the days to come, so bear with me. It is my hope that my blog will inspire, enlighten, and insight responses.
Renaissance and Revolution
Both words represent dramatic change, one with the connotation of arts, literature and intellectual transformation; the other political transformation, through the use of force and violence. The common ground for both is the societal changes towards creation of better lives for the masses.
Revolution: The word derives from Late Latin revolutio “a revolving,” from Latin revolvere “turn, roll back”. It entered English, from Old French révolution, in 1390, originally only applied to celestial bodies. Only circa 1450 was it being used to mean ” [an]instance of great change in affairs”; The word renaissance means “rebirth.” The idea of rebirth originated in the belief that Europeans had rediscovered the superiority of Greek and Roman culture after many centuries of what they considered intellectual and cultural decline. Renaissance; a series of literary and cultural movements. The periods defined as renaissance are influenced by the concept of humanism, which emphasizes the worth of the individual. Renaissance humanists believed it was possible to improve human society through classical education. This education relied on teachings from ancient texts and emphasized a range of disciplines, including poetry, history, rhetoric (rules for writing influential prose or speeches), and moral philosophy. Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (February 24, 1463 – November 17, 1494) was an Italian Renaissance humanist philosopher and scholar, whose short influential life was brilliant, peripatetic, adventurous and almost theatrical in its eventfulness and intensity. In the Oration on the Dignity of Man (1486), Pico justifies the importance of the human quest for knowledge within a neo-Platonic framework. He writes that after God had created all creatures, he conceived of the desire for another, sentient being who would appreciate all his works, but there was no longer any room in the chain of being; all the possible slots from angels to worms had been filled. So, God created man such that he had no specific slot in the chain. Instead, men were capable of learning from and imitating any existing creature. When man philosophizes, he ascends the chain of being towards the angels, and communion with God. When he fails to exercise his intellect, he vegetates. The root of this dignity lay in his assertion that only human beings could change themselves through their own free will, whereas all other changes in nature were the result of some outside force acting on whatever it is that undergoes change. The Harlem Renaissance was a flowering of art, literature and music in the United States led primarily by the African American community based in Harlem, New York City. The Harlem Renaissance was one of primarily African American involvement and an intrapersonal support system of black patrons, black owned businesses and publications, and so on. But, on the peripheral it was supported by a number of white Americans who through genuine altruistic generosity, paternalism, and perhaps a degree of liberal guilt provided various forms of assistance to these black artists and opened doors for them which otherwise would have remained closed to the publicizing of their work to a larger audience outside of the black American community. This support often took the form of being a patron, a publisher, or another artist of some variety. Then, there were those whites interested in so-called “primitive” cultures, as many whites viewed black American culture at that time and wanted to see this “primitivism” in the work coming out of the Harlem Renaissance. Other interpersonal dealings between whites and blacks can be categorized as exploitational because of the desire to capitalize on the “fad,” and “fascination” of the African American being in “vogue.”

Closing Remarks: It does not matter what word (renaissance or revolution) better represents you current state or status, the real challenge is to making efforts to bring about changes for the masses, better lives. The Internet provides each individual that chooses to plug-in, a gateway to personal expression and exploration. Too often the desire to maintain ones anonymity is a fallacy. Take greater responsibility for you thoughts and your ability to influence others in your communication; no matter if it is music, art, poetry, writing, etc. “When man philosophizes, he ascends the chain of being towards the angels, and communion with God. When he fails to exercise his intellect, he vegetates.” Mirandola Put your name on it!!
