Defending world champion Kerron Clement (Los Angeles, Calif.) was not in his usual form because of a groin injury, and his quest to defend his title ended as he did not advance to finals. Clement finished eighth place in his heat in 55.44.

For Angelo Taylor followers, here is an update on his performance at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, Korea - Day 3 (8/29).

Angelo Taylor cruises to a second place finish behind Javier Culson, advancing to the semi-finals.   See Taylor: gold shoes, shades, arms extended, and ready to fly over every hurdle, right past the competition.  The semi-finals will be run on Day 4 (8/30) in the afternoon session of the meet.

Angelo Taylor - USA 4X400 Relay

Day 3 of the IAAF World Championships begins the running activities for Angelo Taylor.  Taylor will be competing in the 400m Hurdles and 4X400 Relay team.  These World Championships come with lots of anxiety for the competitors; with the London 2012 Olympics less that a year away, top performers at this event will be heavy favorites at next summer’s Olympics. Taylor is expected to garner gold medals on the biggest stages of track & field.

Taylor is favored by most track analysts to win Gold Medals in the 400m Hurdles and 4X400 Relay in Daegu, Korea.  Despite finishing third in a photo finish at the USA Outdoor Championships in June, track observers point to the good season that Taylor has had in both the VISA and Samsung Diamond Leagues.  Post USA Outdoor Championships, Taylor ran well in the weeks to follow in Lausanne, Switzerland, Monte Carlo, Monaco, Stockholm, Sweden, and London, England.  Taylor’s experience and ability to get up for the big races gives him an edge over the competition.

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Walmart.

Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women – she loves to browse.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Walmart:

Dear Mrs. Clifton
Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store.  We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store.  Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Clifton, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:

1. June 15:  He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking.
2. July 2:  Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
3. July 7:  He made a trail from a jar of brown gravy on the floor leading to the both the ladies and men’s restrooms.
4. July 19:  Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, ‘Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away’. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.
5. August 4:  Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.
6. August 14:  Moved a ‘CAUTION – WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area.
7. August 15:  Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.
8. August 23:  When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’  EMTs were called.
9. September 4:  Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.
10. September 10:  While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.
11. October 3:  Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ‘ Mission Impossible’ theme.
12. October 6:  In the auto department, he practiced his “Madonna look” by using different sizes of funnels.

This was sent to me as a chain letter, it had me laughing, I hope you had the same response.  All humor aside, a lot of men feel the same way about being forced to visit Wal-Mart with the significant other; the difference is that most men are not clever enough to make it an adventure that annoys the employees.  I say hurray for Mr. Clifton and tell the wife that there is another Wal-Mart in the next town that you want to shop at.  A year from now look for another post as to what Mr. Clifton has done lately to make his shopping more enjoyable!!

You cannot channel surf on your TV without flipping to a reality show.  Several of these shows are about house wives .  Why is there this fascination with housewives?  Some aren’t really even housewives or at least not like any I know.

These shows can be very negative, but at the same time very addictive.  Almost like watching a train wreck, not a pretty picture. But you find it hard to look away.

Why is it so captivating?  Are these women’s behavior and reactions to situations so different from ours?  Are these women on camera bringing to light how many everyday females conduct themselves or is it over the top drama that make for good ratings?

We all play out some form of drama in our lives at one time or another.  But can our drama compare with the “housewives drama”? Are these reality shows showing a true reflection of women or are they being “reality scripted” just to keep us tuned in?  It seems like we have an obsession with “cat fighting” Or is it just that we are fascinated with bitchy women with their claws out, and for some, it may make us feel better about the negative things in our own relationships?

It’s hard enough for some women to separate soap operas from reality, so what is this negative “reality female” behavior really saying to young women.  Especially when it seems like the more malicious and mean you act the more air time you get.

So what you haven’t met all your fitness goals.  Valentine’s is a time to go all out! No Drama - New Year's Resolution

When drama lives or visits your house, it may be time for someone to get a new address; better yet a new attitude. Let’s start the New Year with a fresh attitude and see how long it can last.

Don’t know if you’ve noticed this from my columns and books. I write about relationships, not necessarily how to get into one or how to keep one, but how to rid yourself of relationship drama.

“DRAMA CURES”

Now, some folks it seems, have an addiction to drama, because they need the attention, they’re bored or for whatever reason. For others, they’re caught up in “generational curses”. This means one or more parent had (or still has) major relationship drama in their day-to-day lives, which they may have inherited.

When you witness a parent going through psychical or emotional drama on a regular basis your mind recognizes this as somewhat normal behavior. You become desensitized to what is dysfunctional because it’s a typical part of your environment. So in turn your relationships mimic the ones from previous generations.

On the upside, generational curses can be broken. Sometimes we recognize that our relationships are not healthy but think we don’t have the tools to stop the cycle of madness that has been ingrained into our lives.

Phrase for 2011, “Don’t underestimate your ability to change yourself, and don’t over estimate the ability to change someone else.”

Tips on being DRAMA FREE

• You need to clean out your closet. I mean literally clean out your closet. You will not have room for anything positive or worthwhile if you have too much clutter and baggage. Get rid of all the negative aspects and get a fresh clean start.
• Start making better choices. Now I know there are times when you thought it was the right thing to do at the time. But be honest with yourself. When it come to most bad decisions we make, we knew it wasn’t a good idea in the first place.
• Slow down. Avoid making decisions when you’re very sad, very happy or in a hurry. Don’t be so quick to react or jump to conclusions. If at all possible, take your time, consider the cause and effect.
• Other phrase for 2011 – “I’ll get back with you.”, “Let me meditate on that.”

The biggest tip

Spend time alone. Get to know YOU! Take time out and try to see what it is you want out of life and your relationships. This also means taking time out from your friends too. Even friends with the best intentions can distract you from what you really want. Plus, you need to evaluate those relationships too. Sometimes a friend relationship can be just as toxic as a relationship with your significant other.

Attributes of a Good Consultant

Consultants often get bad press or are perceived to be an expensive resource brought in by senior management (and resented by their team), bringing little value. I’ve put together a collection of attributes that I think a good consultant needs to have or bring to the table which will hopefully go towards reversing these perceptions.

In the last few years, there has been an increase in teen pregnancy and analysts don’t know why. Every day more and more teenage girls of all races are giving birth to children. You would think with free and easy access to contraception and the abundance of information regarding AIDS statistics and other sexually transmitted diseases that teens having unprotected sex would be on the decline. But unfortunately the reality is quite contrary.

Reality is: Two-thirds of these teen moms will not graduate from high school, will receive some form of welfare assistance, and have sons who are at a greater risk of being caught up in the penal system.

Or maybe, just maybe, teen pregnancy has become parent approved! Has it become such a common sight to see a teen with a pregnant belly, that it is now socially acceptable? Do parents take in stride the fact that they are grandparents after being a parent for only 13 or 14 years? Why are our babies rushing to have babies?

What You Think You Know

Just think for a minute……….. If trying to convince a grown woman to postpone sex for 90 days goes into one ear and out the other, how are we going to convince a teenager to restrain from having sex? The thought of a woman over 25 keeping her legs closed for 3 months is like asking black folk to give up barbeque ribs for tofu. Now, let us try getting a teenager to ignore all the sexual images they’re bombarded with daily; that would be like mission impossible. Believe it or not, that busy box in your living room you have entertaining/babysitting your kids, has a huge influence on our teens.

You have women who are way past legal age, and still don’t realize that within a relationship their man should treat them with respect or get to steppin. So how will we convince a teenager?

“Look out for guys that aren’t house broken. Sometimes a guy will do things that are disrespectful. Rather than perceive what he did as being disrespectful, you’ll charge it to him growing up on the other side of the fence and not knowing any better. Well, if he doesn’t know any better and you do, then the two of you aren’t equally meshed, are you? Sometimes we take things too lightly. Sometimes it’s not that he wasn’t taught any better, it’s about him not giving a damn about you to show you respect.”

Even a woman that has ‘been around the block” has difficulty accepting the phrase “my body is my temple” is not just some form of Holy-Roller Rhetoric. Trying to get her to see that she should love and respect her body at any age is quite a task. Now we’re going to convince our teenagers to hold that part of them sacred and not just give it away, when they have images of girls who are popular or even famous because of how promiscuous they are. Our young girls take in these images from reality shows, where regular people are thrust into stardom, wear designer clothes, and live a seemingly glamorous life because of who they had sex with or who they have a baby by. So sex seems a small price to pay in exchange for cars, clothes or even fame.

You enjoy the reward! “At least I’m getting paid for it, instead of giving it away for free.” Designer items are not that serious even if you have always been deprived of them. Trading sex for material possessions is still prostitution. Once you start this, it becomes easier and easier, and can simply become a way of life. This is not the income you want to become accustomed to, or dependent on.”

Oh, maybe that’s the reason for the increase in teen pregnancy! In trying to get our daughters to understand sex, and relationships, we adults might have to subject ourselves to a mirror.

Or is it the……. do as I say and not as I do rule………….That’s keeping it real!

Parent(s)! Dare to buy this book and read it with your daughter. Not only will this help bring dialogue, it can open the lines of communication and be a positive experience. Have the courage to break down walls. Even if you think you’re on top of things……..sometimes, what you think you know, you don’t.

Steve Harvey’s Dating Advice

One of the original Kings of Comedy, Steve Harvey is the host of one of the most popular radio shows in the country, The Steve Harvey Morning Show. His first book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, is shooting to the top of the best-seller lists, and Oprah says she loves everything it has to say!

Steve says this book has a special meaning for him. “This is the first project that I didn’t do for money,” he says. “Other than my foundation—mentoring programs—everything I do is for money. I tell jokes for a check; I’m on TV for a check. … But this [book] right here I did purely to empower women.”

The Introduction

In his book, Steve says the way a man introduces you gives good insight into the status of your relationship. If a man introduces you as a friend or says your name with no title at all, Steve says you have nothing. “We’re very protective. We mark our territory. If a man loves you…he’s willing to profess it. He’ll give you a title after a while. You’re going to be his lady, his woman, his fiancée, his wife, his baby’s mama, something,” he says. “If he’s introducing you after six months, ‘This is…Oprah,’ you should be standing there going, ‘This is going nowhere.’”

Man with a Plan

Another thing women need to understand, according to Steve, is that every man has a plan. “Men don’t come up to you to just talk. We come up to you with a plan,” he says. “We’re looking across the room at you, and we don’t care about your hopes and dreams. We don’t care about what your future holds. We saw something we wanted.”

When a man approaches a woman, Steve says, he already knows what we wants from her, but he doesn’t know what it will cost. “How much time do you want from me? What your standards? What are your requirements? Because we’ll rise to the occasion no matter how high you set the bar if we want to,” he says. “The problem is, women have stopped setting the bar high.”

The Cookie

Though a woman might want many things from a man, Steve says men only need three things: support, loyalty and sex. Or as Steve calls it, “the cookie.” “We’ve got to have your support. Whatever adventure we’re out on, whatever pursuit in life, we need your support. Then we need your loyalty. That’s your love. We’ve got to know that you belong to us,” he says. “And we’ve got to have a cookie. Everybody likes cookies. That’s the thing about a cookie. I like oatmeal raisin…but if you’ve got vanilla cream, I’ll eat that too.”

I dedicate this book to teen girls and their parents, or better yet, to the parent(s) of teen girls.

Dear Parent(s)

Have we thrown in the towel on our teen girls and accepted teen pregnancy as a part of our culture? If not, have you covered all bases informing your daughter about what a bad relationship is and the reality of being a teen mom?

This book is a must! Last year there were approximately 700,000 teen pregnancies. Maybe parents are in denial about their daughters having sex, forget what young love is like and the trials that young girls go through, involved in unhealthy behavior yourself and your passing this behavior on to your daughter. Not to insult you as a parent. But sometimes we need to get back to the basics in order to gain control or our relationships.

Please do not send your young daughter out into the dating world uniformed, Lil Junior’s got game. Please, provide your daughter with some kind of defense, come back line, rebuttal, a strong hell-to-the-no!

Let’s be realistic! How much does a brotha have to be able to afford to maintain a relationship with you? Now, it’s always easy for a brotha who has it going on financially to dictate what another brotha should have the funds for. But the truth is, the well-to-do brotha make up a very small fraction of society and depending on your geographic location, that portion can be minuscule. So just how “fat” should the average brotha’s wallet be? What’s the compromise?

What are our options:

If you eliminate the brotha’s that are currently incarcerated, that’s about 750,000. Do away with the black men that you know are gay, and women should remove married men from their dating pool also. Women, in addition eradicate a huge amount of potentials if they refuse to date outside of their race or culture, keeping in mind the fact that brotha’s frequently date outside of their race. Therefore, black women have to compete with Asian, Hispanic and white women too. Now, look at what you’re left to choose from.

Therefore you have to ask yourself; are finances still going to be a major factor regarding looking for love and having a lasting relationship?

Some Black women are caught in the MATRIX. We read too many books and watch a great deal television shows and movies that are geared towards white women and how love and relationships work for them.

Fact or excuse:

• Since the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation, there have been more jobs available for black females than black males.
• A black man is the last to get hired and the first to get fired.
• A black male is more likely to be discriminated against than the black female.

Now how can we become fixated on finance when we’re not dealing with the same type man?

For starters; the male is believed to be trying to woo the female, so he is definitely required to pay for the first 2 or 3 dates. If he can’t afford that he shouldn’t bother to step to a female, until he gets his ish together. (Agree or Disagree?)

Later, once the two of you have determined that this will be a serious, committed relationship then you can begin a 50/50 split, “that’s seems fair, you think?” After all, he has bills to pay too. He may have monthly child support payments, a car note, car insurance, rent, a student loan to repay, and/or strip club donations, etc.

Okay, let’s change that to 60/40, is that more doable?

What about the sistah that really likes the guy but, she makes considerably more than he does? Is it cool for the sistah to pick up the larger tabs or expenses? Should the two of them only go places and only do things which he can afford? Will that cause the sistah to feel she’s lowering her standards? Can a man handle a long term relationship with a sistah that is in a better financial situation without an ego or animosity kicking in? And can females handle making more money than her man without trying to punk or belittle him? This is where relationships can become tricky.

After years of talking/listening to women advise other women about their “dead end relationships” I was really becoming irked.

Either:

• She’ll create a scenario on a guy she doesn’t know.
• She’ll dig real deep for some positive feedback (so she doesn’t hurt her feelings)
• She’ll tell the honest truth and risk being accused of being a “hater” or being jealous.
• She’s in a jacked-up relationship herself, so she’ll fill her friend’s head with the same distorted explanations she’s convinced herself of.

This is what led me to write “SISTERS STOP ASKING SISTERS, I’M A BLACK MAN JUST ASK ME”. I just had to probe black men for the inside scoop on what we women ponder over. Women, don’t try this at home! A man will hold back information when he’s out to gain or has something to lose. Buy the book!

The majority of women’s relationship problems are self-inflicted. Either they let go too soon, or hang on too long. Sistahs don’t seem to understand the concept of dating. Dating is the trial an error period between two people. Think of it like starting a new job. You have a 90 day probationary period, so don’t get too comfortable.

“We’ve all read and heard enough about this 90 probationary period. Are women scared of this rule? Are women afraid that if she doesn’t have sex with the guy before 90 days, another girl will.”

Women need to realize that not all men are going to wait around, those who don’t were only there for the benefits package. Those that do fall into two categories: the ones who were already getting it somewhere else; and the ones who want something more out of a relationship. The question is, if you’re not getting busy what are you doing for 90 days? I found a blog that gave some good insight on what can happen during those 90 days

1. Talking on the phone. It always feels great to have those long conversations as you learn more about each other, but that may not work for everyone.
2. Discuss what you want to be when you grow up. We all have our hopes and dreams no matter what age we are. What you want to do for the rest of your life and your goals for the future are an important issue.
3. Let your other “friends” know that you are not available. Nobody thinks that you were just sitting at home waiting for them but having to fight for time and attention can reduce a person’s interest level.
4. Discover what the other person’s “outside the relationship” interests are. We all need to be interested in something away from the relationship such as a hobby or career goals. You must be comfortable enough with the others interest to encourage them to succeed.
5. Nothing brings out the truth better than a good drink. If you are not into adult beverages, use whatever substance causes your personality to default to its truthful self. Just ask all the questions that you really want to ask. Remember that alcohol lowers your inhibitions, so be careful if you’re serious about sticking to the 90 day rule.
6. One of the most important things in a relationship is a sense of humor. Explore this quality in each other. Making each other laugh is one thing that will get you through some bad days.
7. Who’s the Boss! Is this going to be a democratic relationship or is one person clearly dominant? If you both want to be in charge in the same situations, that is when problems arise.
8. Meet the friends. It doesn’t matter who or how many but you need to make that happen. This will disclose any negative feelings one might have about the other.
9. Finally, find something to argue about. Okay they may think you’re crazy when you try this one, but the way a person approaches an argument and communicates their feelings is important. Do they get personal and hit below the belt, or do they play it safe and let you win?

If you go through some of these exercises, you’ll know more about each other, you will have built a certain level of trust, and seen if you and your lifestyles are compatible. Now comes the issue of chemistry. The act of sharing so much about yourself with someone else has allowed a certain amount of intimacy to develop.

The feature exhibit is a collection of works authored by Bend Quilters – Tinnie & Minnie Pettway entitled “Tinnie Pieces with Minnie Designs”. The style of the Gees Bend quilting fits perfectly with the theme of the Ebony Stitchers Quilt Exhibit of Going Green – RePurpose, ReCycle & ReUse. The success of Gees Bend Quilters lends a great deal of excitement to this year’s exhibit. The Quilt Exhibit will also have several activities for children and adults; such as quilting classes, workshops and lectures throughout the weekend. Vendors!!!

Definition: Love Addict

“Painful attention, which is the attention that will result in negative consequences, was normal to me. Although I did not like the consequence of suffering, at least the pain was always consistent. “Pain” could always be counted on to arrive at my door and I would more than willingly receive it with open arms. So why would I waste my time waiting on good things to come in my life when I was the only one always standing myself up and leaving me out to dry? So I dated “Pain” for years. In the beginning “Pain” hurt me but, like most relationships, you get used to it and become numb to its negative antics.

Like a battered woman, I was in an abusive relationship with “Pain.” Even though I didn’t like the name calling, the punishment, or the spankings from my mother I was mentally bound and couldn’t leave. Like a kidnapped child with Stockholm syndrome, I developed a bond with my captor called “Pain”. I became its Bonnie and it was my Clyde.”
